Demystifying the COMMISSION Process
Commissioning a piece for the first time can be daunting, but there is no need for it to be! The following is my process for custom work.
Introduction
`Introduce yourself and the project over email or the phone. Through this I can get to know what you are looking for and if the project is within my scope of work. Take a look through my previous work and see if my aesthetic fits your style. If your taste is better suited for another craftsperson I will let you know and direct you to any that I can recommend.
Rough Estimate of cost
Custom furniture doesn’t have to cost a fortune! After getting an idea of what you are looking for I can give you a rough estimate of cost. My price calculations come directly from estimating the material cost plus hours of labor and local taxes. This estimate is subject to change once we nail down details, but it should be informative in your decision to go forward with the commission or not.
Sketches and Models
The next step is to create sketches and digital models of the project, at this time we can make adjustments and nail down the size and material details. I require a deposit for sketches and an agreement that you wont take them to another craftsperson.
Contract and Deposit
After agreeing on a design we will sign a contract to make the piece. A deposit for fifty percent of the project will be expected at this time.
Build and Deliver
This part is in up to me to make your custom piece. I assure you it will be built with care and precision. Depending on your proximity to the studio, I will either deliver, or ship the finished piece to you.
